You might be the victim of an auto accident at some point. And you get hit by another vehicle out on the road and you amass quite a bit of medical bills, pain, suffering, bother, just not good stuff. Then, come to find out, as we pursue the claim that the other side — all they have in terms of coverage is like $25 or $30,000 worth of coverage and that’s not going to get you very far.
And what makes matters worse is if you only have $25 to $30,000 worth of uninsured motorist coverage on your own policy and that’s called UIM, UIM. And so that part of your policy, not the other side’s policy, is a special line item on your coverage that you can pay extra for. It’s called uninsured/under insured motorist coverage and it’s that way in California and Nevada. That coverage is for you in the event that the other side does not have any coverage at all. So they’re driving without insurance or they don’t have enough coverage to cover all your damages. If my firm is representing you, after we max out the policy for the other side, like if they have just such a small policy, then we turn to your own coverage and we file a UM or a UIM claim against your own insurance policy to try to tap into that coverage. And if you have really, really low coverage there, guess what? That’s your max. That’s all you’re going to get. So if you’re carrying high liability coverage, which is what pays for the other driver, if you’re carrying $100,000, $300,000, $250,000 worth of liability coverage, try to pay for, go ahead and get that same amount for yourself so that you cover yourself. That’s why UM/UIM is important and since it comes so far down on the line items of what you’re paying for it, you might think that’s not important. It is important. That’s how you protect yourself. Okay? And, I highly recommend that you reevaluate those and find out how much it’s going to cost. Because I think probably for the amount that it costs and it’s going to do you a whole lot of good. I guess maybe I’m making a plug for the insurance companies that’s going to help them, but it helps you in the answer. |
