This is a common misconception.  Many future lawyers learn this their very first year of law school.

Wikipedia defines tortas “a rich, usually multilayered, cake that is filled with whipped cream, buttercreams, mousses, jams, or fruits.”

However a tort is the legal word for many of the legal causes of action applicable to people and property damaged by the negligence of others.   Officially it is defined as an act or omission that gives rise to injury or harm to another and amounts to a civil wrong for which courts impose liability. In the context of torts, “injury” describes the invasion of any legal right, whereas “harm” describes a loss or detriment in fact that an individual suffers, according to a famous book called the Restatement (Second) of Torts § 7.
